WrestlingGear.com Newsletter - Get Ready for the Mat
September 7, 2003
As the start of the season is approaching quickly, now is the time to "Get Ready for The Mat." At WrestlingGear.Com we have added quite a few new products from last year. Now we have lower shipping prices and more options to get your gear according to your priority...
Look for the return of the Black/Red Combat Speeds, new Mouth Pieces from Shock Doctor, and the much anticipated custom color of Tornados to be some of the hottest new products on the site. We have added 4 new book titles and Dan Gable's New Videos or DVD is must have. Keep in touch and let us know of other products you would like added to the site.
Please trade links with us or add a banner to your web site and we will add lins back to your sites. Most websites won't link back to other sites we do! We appreciate that you will link to us so we want to return the favor. Our only restriction is the site can not have "adult" content on it...for obvious reasons.
In this issue we have highlighted a couple hot items. Also, word from Adidas is our Combat Speeds will be in next week or so. Be sure to get those orders for the Combat Speeds in now. We have ordered a bunch of the shoes, but they are already selling well.
Also, you will find an excerpt from WinningState to help you get ready for this season. Add this to your checklist of gear you need for next season. Don't overlook the mental side of wrestling, it is just as important as nutrition, strength, technique, and conditioning.
Towards the bottom there are a couple articles from USA Wrestling. One is about the World being broadcasted on TV - keep this date open and get your VCR's ready. After that is an email I got from Ted, he has a special offer for you about a highlight film. These are always done very well and if the videos are comparable to what I have seen in the past, you will not be disappointed. Please tell Ted that you saw it from my mailing list...
Finally, keep in touch. If you would like to submit an individual wrestler profile, visit this link and tell us about you. Our goal is to get all of these up on the site with a photo or two so you can promote your self and your accomplishments. Even let us know your goals and what you are doing everyday to work towards them.

Beneath The Armor Of An Athlete on WrestlingGear.Com
Beneath the Armor of the Athlete is the story of women's freestyle wrestling from the unique point of view of one of the wrestlers. While many sports books contribute to a reader's athletic development, this book also focuses on the private, personal development of the athlete. Specifically, this book suggests that athletes can use their unique competitive experiences to uncover thoughts and behaviors that may be hindering their growth as human beings.

"WinningSTATE" by Steven Knight
Here is an excerpt from Chapter Two of "WinningSTATE" titled
"THE ARENA: Conquer It"
The arena at state: double-digit mats, hundreds of wrestlers, and thousands of spectators. This distractions are nonstop, and the confusion can be overwhelming. The arena will take you out of your mental comfort zone and leave you numb, babbling in the corner, if you don't have a plan.
When it comes to tournaments I think of everything in war terms. Over the years, through personal trial-and-error, I developed seven Combat/Tournament Routines. They are: Pack It, Cut It, Fuel It, Rest It, Visualize It, Compose It, and Dominate It.
The seven primary Combat Routines are really two pre-tournament routines, and five pre-match routines. Follow these routines before, during, and after each match.
"Pack It": Make a list first. Then make sure ALL of your physical necessities are gathered together and ready to be packed: equipment, clothes, food, and fluids. Pack for each month. Example: If you want a fresh t-shirt after each match, list it and pack it. If you want a couple of different sweats, put them on the list, and pack it. If you have specific music that you want along, list it and pack it. Whatever is important to you, list it and pack it.
Why put out the extra effort to use a list? Because when there are a lot of things to organize, and you don't want to leave anything behind, a list provides assurance. Little dogs: you mother is not your list--do it yourself.
Don't pack your bag(s) until you've gathered everything in a group on the floor in front of you, and you can check it off before you pack it. Be organized and meticulous about packing your necessities, not only will you have everything you want and need at the tournament, it puts your mind in a calm, focused place-a tournament frame of mind.
"Cut-It": This is a touchy subject in wrestling. I am not going to comment on how much weight is appropriate to cut, or how to cut it. The most important aspect of making weight is doing it with as little drama as possible during the final 24 hours--especially before a major tournament. Your goal should be to go to bed the night before a half-pound over, and wake up dead on. The morning of a major tournament should be as painless as possible, with minimal hassle, so you can cruise through weigh-ins, and conserve energy.
"Fuel It": If you're a junk-food eater and a colroed sugar-water drinker, study Chapter Three with heightened interest. The Fuel & Hydration Routine is one of the KEY routines in the five stages of getting ready to compete.
"Rest It": Resting is less for your body and more for your mind and emotions. The psychological intensity of maintaining composure during the final thirty minutes before a match, and the emotional ups-and-downs of the match itself, are very draining, and require mental regrouping. To repeat: Resting is less for your body and more for your mind and emotions.
"Visualize It": The visualization routine laid out in Chapter Five will help you stay focused mentally. You will use your visualization routines constantly.
"Compose It": Confidence comes and goes. It is fleeting-especially as you approach staging, then, when you hit the On-Deck area emotions surge. This is where composure skills are critical. Chapter Six is your guide to composure skills, and how to develop your personal pre-match routine.
"Dominate It": This is more of an attitude than it is a routine. Even though there is a mental sequence to go through, you'll find that Warrior Mode activates itself as a natural result of doing everything else right. Follow me? Let's break it down.

Message from USA Wrestling
Dear Wrestling Friend,
I hope many of you are getting ready to go to the Worlds. If you can't be there, please follow the coverage on TheMat.com.
The Freestyle teams broke camp last Saturday and went home for a couple of days. Now the Men's Freestyle team is in New York training at the NYAC, putting the finishing touches on what we hope will be a Championship performance. The Women's team leaves for NYC on Sunday and will taper for their tournament as well.
This year's Worlds promises to be a spectacular event through the leadership of the Manhattan Amateur Wrestling Association and the NYC2012 Committee. It is expected that close to 80 countries will be represented. Many USAW employees have put in long hours trying to get all the communication work done.
One of the toughest problems has been getting visas for some members of delegations. It appears this afternoon that much of the Iranian delegation has been granted passage. So, we are hopeful that a little more work will bring the whole squad to New York.
Since you are on my email list I wanted to give you a special offer. We will be releasing a new highlight video from the 2002 World Team Trials after I return from the World Championships. Because you are part of the wrestling community that I've worked with I'm offering you the opportunity to get the new "Something's Got to Give" highlight tape for just $19.95--with no shipping and handling added.
When we begin advertising the video on TheMat.com it will sell for $24.95 plus $5 shipping and handling. If you would like to take advantage of this special offer, you must fax or mail in your "Presale" order form to USA Wrestling before September 20th. Please see the attached flier for more details.
This tape is a lot of fun. I really think you'll love it.
Make the commitment. Join USA Wrestling!
