Title IX Update from Chicago Meeting
I was amazed at the Chicago Meeting that discussed the Title IX issue. I imagined there were going to be a ton of males calling foul.
How can a law that may be partially resposible for the destruction of over 400 collegiate wrestling programs not get people motivated to get rid of Title IX?
I am in that category of not speaking loudly against Title IX. What is the solution for changing Title IX? In high school I learned you simply write a letter to a politician and they will listen. But is more needed? What is needed is a PR Machine and political machine that can make sure our needs are being addressed? Do the wrestlers have such an organization? Who should we support both with our time and financial resources? I don't have an answer. I will find one if there is one out there.
If someone has a suggestion, please email me. And why not form an alliance with other sports that are being cancelled - essentially all male sports other than Basketball and Football teams.
We are still trying to get a handle on who received the letter from Sue Hinrichsen of the IHSA where she mis-represented the official position of the IHSA. The letter spoke of the official position of the IHSA, however, the director of the IHSA Marty Hickman said this letter did not represent the official position of the IHSA. The reason this is so important is Sue Hinrichsen spoke to the panel at the Chicago meeting. If you are from Illinois, ask your wrestling coaches to ask their AD's to see if they received this letter. It is possible your high school coaches in Illinois received this letter. We were told this letter did not go out to the general public, but it sounds like the letter was passed out at least one meeting.
Here is some information that is just about everywhere on the internet, but I felt it is worth sending to you again.
TITLE IX - GET INVOLVED TO HELP SAVE COLLEGIATE AND HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING...
Federal Title IX panel sets schedule with town hall approach. The U.S. Department of Education has announced the dates and sites for town hall meetings planned by the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics, the panel appointed by Secretary of Education Rod Paige to examine Title IX.
Ted Leland, athletics director at Stanford University, and Cynthia Cooper, former WNBA star, co-chair the commission.
"These meetings will give us a chance to listen, observe and absorb the views of those who care deeply about this issue," Leland said. "We look forward to these very important conversations in communities across the country."
Each meeting will include panels of four invited speakers and comments from the general public on the various topics addressed in the commission's charter.
IMPORTANT TITLE IX BULLETIN - Public must register to attend and must sign up to speak at each of the federal Title IX Commission Town Hall meetings.
Those interested in participating in the public portions of the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics must first register with the commission in order to guarantee the opportunity to attend and speak on the issue.
The meeting schedule is:
Day 1
9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. -- Three panel discussions, each with four invited
speakers.
2-5 p.m. -- Presentations by the general public.
Day 2
9 a.m. -- There will be no opportunity for public comment, though the public may observe. Commissioners will spend this time regrouping and processing the information heard the previous day.
Colorado Springs, location TBA -- October 22-23. Same schedule as previous meeting.
San Diego, location TBA -- November 20-21. Same schedule as previous meeting. The group also will meet in Philadelphia December 4 and Washington, D.C., January 8, 2003. Those meetings will not include any public comment sessions. Instead, the focus of those meetings will be the details of the report the commission plans to submit to Paige. The report is due January 31, 2003.
Members of the public who will attend a meeting should contact the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics immediately in order to register and sign up for time to speak. Each speaker will have between 3-5 minutes of time. There may be limits on the number of people who can attend and speak, so it is very important to register right now! Don't wait - DO IT TODAY.

STRENGTH TRAINING FOR WRESTLING
This will be a work in progress. As I complete more research on designing stregth training programs specific to wrestlers, I will update you through out the season.
So far I have found there should be distinctive programs for inseason and out of season lifting programs. With the way serious wrestlers are wrestling year round is there an out of season any more? Well what is out of season, you will need to determine this for yourself. During out of season workouts - the focus should be building strength. In season workouts should be focused on maintaining strength and building on it slightly. This is according to world class wrestler - Ed Giese.
Another common concept to all the research I have done, is to focus on safety. While this seems to be obvious, it is difficult when 6 boys/men are around the bench press bench looking to see how much they can bench. Same thing goes with the Squat rack. All exercises need to be performed safely with adequate supervision.
Along with adequate supervision and safety, you need a plan. What are your strength goals? Are you looking to increase your bench, dead lift, squat? Are you looking to improve muscular endurance? Are you looking to be the next body building Mr. Olympia?
Most of the wrestlers work outs I have found are working the entire body each work out. But are you working it in a circuit training program or strength training program. The same exercises done with little or no rest in between sets will produce different results if you do similar exercises with a minute or two minutes in between each set.
As I complete the research, I plan to develop workouts for youth, teen, and high school wrestlers. I'd love to hear from you on the strength programs you are doing during the season and out of season...

GOAL SETTING IS KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS ON AND OFF THE MAT
Goal setting is key for success on the mat and off the mat. A dream of winning a state championship, qualifying for the state tournament, or getting into a top university becomes a goal simply by writing it down. Now to make it an attainable goal, you need to write the goal down develop an action plan, evaluate your progress, modify your action plan, evaluate your progress, modify your action plan, and continue to modify and evaluate your progress toward achieving this goal.
Be sure to set your goals for something that you feel is a "dream." Make sure you set something that will motivate you for an entire season and off season. Be sure to set athletic, academic, and personal goals.
After you have set these goals, develop a plan to achieve each goal. Develop a date you want to achieve these goals. For example, if your deadline is 4 months away - what do you want to achieve by month 3, by month 2, by month 1. Work backwards towards achieving your goals so you can determine what you are going to need to do to attain them. Then develop weekly goals and then develop daily goals to work towards each goal. No plan then no map. No map is like trying to get from Chicago to Washington DC by getting into a car and start taking random right and left turns.
Make sure you are commited 100% towards achieving the goals you set. They need to inspire you so when the going gets tough, you keep on going.
