WrestlingGear.Com Update - Wrestling Your Perfect Match & New Gear
December 15, 2002
----------------------------------------------------------
This month I wanted to continue to encourage you to get involved with Title IX.
If you are in a position to suport the cause...we have provided an article that
appeared on themat.com
There is a link to the web site where you can make donations. One of the members
of this group is the head wrestling coach at the University of Chicago.
It addition you will find a review of the second chapter of "Wrestle Your
Perfect Match." If you have been around any world class wrestlers, almost
everyone knows of Beasy Hendrix...lots of Olympic wrestlers have worked with him
and his program.
Finally, I have included a couple articles about wrestling in Illinois. If you
are looking for a place to wrestle, why not check out the top wrestling and
academic institutions in Illinois...
And remember to review your goals and the progress you are making towards them.
There is still plenty of time to step up your committement to attaining your
goals. You may even have to back off your training routine to make sure you are
healthy for the end of the year. Try to do something every day to work towards
your goals.
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A YOUTH WRESTLING TOURNAMENT?
----------------------------------------------------------
If you are looking for a youth wrestling tournament, check out this tournament
to be hosted in Danville, Illinois. Danville is located near Champaign,
Illinois.
Many states are within driving distance of this tournament. It will have a
changed format, it will be a Varsity tournament on Sunday along with a 10 and
under division for the younger kids.
The wrestling mats will be open on Saturday night to allow you to work out prior
to the Sunday event. Look for some tough competition from Illinois to attend.
AN APPEAL FOR SUPPORT FROM THE COLLEGE SPORTS COUNCIL

Leo Kocher/College Sports Council
Dear supporter of the college student athlete:
Hello, my name is Leo Kocher, President of the Board of the College Sports
Council and the head wrestling coach at the University of Chicago. Along with
several others, I was featured on last Sundays 60 Minutes television program
regarding Title IX and now I am writing to ask for your financial support.
You have likely noticed the significant increase in publicity that has been
generated recently regarding the destruction of opportunities for college male
athletes. We are successfully raising the publics awareness that while Title
IX's original goal of equal opportunity was laudable, Title IX has been twisted
by Federal bureaucrats into a law that is hurting males more than it is helping
females.
The success of this media awareness effort is a direct result of the tireless
work of our professional public relations firm. While we have received an
enormous bang for our buck, the College Sports Council has a critical need of
assistance from student/athlete supporters like yourself to help cover our
outstanding bills and to continue this effort in 2003. We do not want to lose
the momentum that we are now experiencing.
Informing the American citizens of the truth and winning in the court of public
opinion is - by far - the most important part of the effort to reverse the
serious threat to virtually every college male athlete. The opportunity is there
to stop the bleeding and to change the dreaded proportionality criteria for
schools compliance with Title IX. Your contribution can make a BIG difference!
You can best help us, and all endangered student athletes, by making a
tax-deductible contribution today to the College Sports Council. You can make
your contribution by mailing a check to:College Sports Council, P.O. Box 53356,
Washington, DC 20009-9356 or you can contribute by credit card online at our
web-site www.savingsports.org (go to Donations).
Thank you in advance for your generous support.
Very truly yours,
Leo Kocher

Wrestle Your Perfect Match - Beasey Hendrix
----------------------------------------------------------
Wrestling is what percentage mental? The Bronze Clinics I have taught have
mentioned...75%, 85%, 90%??? How much time is spent on mental skills inside or
outside the wrestling room? Well Coach Hendrix has written a book to help you
work on your mental skills...
Here is an excerpt from Chapter 2 of the book. Coach Beasey has authorized us to
give you this information.
Section II concerns:
1) Preparing for a match
2) Individual differences
3) Enchancing performance by
planning
4) Introduction to perfect matches
5) Suggestions and strategies
6)
Adverse situations
7) More on your perfect match
8) Evaluating your plans
1) Preparing for a match -
Coach Hendrix talks about how you should prepare for a match. If your prematch
strategy or routine is working for you...don't change it if ain't broken.
Prematch nervousness - Prematch anxiety is part of both elite and beginner
wrestlers concerns. Accept it as part of the sport and use it...
Preparation hints:
1. Become Self Centered
2. Develop a plan of actin based on what you want to do
3. Understand there are developments to a match that are unexpected and even
unfair.
4. Work to achieve your optimum feeling of readiness.
5. Focus on
appropriate topics
6. No negative self talk
7. Hit your zone or flow state.
8.
Step on the mat. Become a wrestler
9. Perfom
10. Recover from unexpected events
11. Enjoy your performance
Individual Differences:
It is hard for your coach to know every athlete's key to success. Each wrestler
is different. In order for your coach to help you, you need to look to yourself
to understand your individual differences.
Your Performance:
How do you get ready to perform?
Do you have a prematch routine?
How long before
a match do you start preparing?
Do you need help during your prematch routine?
Do you want positive encouragement from a coach or wrestler?
Do you want to work
with a specific coach or wrestler or friend?
Find a quiet place and do the following...
When was your best performances? How did you prepare for them?
When was your worst performance? How did you prepare for it?
ENHANCING YOUR PERFORMANCE:
What you ask for ...
Warm Up and immediate prematch - Wrestlers number one concern is prematch
anxiety...what is your prematch routine?
During the match - 1. Swooshing technique 2. Relabeling it calling it something
else. 3. Delaying it. 4. Denying your fatigue. 5. Liking it...
The biggest point that Coach Beasey emphasizes...is you need to develop your
perfect match and develop strategies for your prematch, start of match, and how
to handle unexpected or even unfair events in the match.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The eighth-ranked University of Illinois wrestling
team won seven out the eight matches they wrestled on Saturday to

competed hard today," said Johnson.

SCOTT OWEN SETS CAREER VICTORIES MARK AS NIU WRESTLERS WIN A PAIR AT ELMHURST
DUALS
ELMHURST, IL - Having faced two ranked opponents to start the year, the
Northern Illinois University wrestling team found itself without a victory going
into the Elmhurst Duals. But that all changed Friday (December 6) as the Huskies
came away with a pair triumphs, defeating Elmhurst College 48-3 while toppling
Loras Colllege 25-10. The wins even Northern Illinois' record at 2-2 on the
year.
Coming into Fridays' matches, senior Scott Owen (Carlsbad, NM) needed just one
more victory to break the all-time record of 95 triumphs set by Mark Kuehl from
1998-91. During his first match of the night, the second ranked wrestler in the
country at 157 pounds pinned Rick Lamas for his 96th victory. Owen came back
later that night to post a technical fall win over Charlie Bishop of Loras
College.
Owen was one of five Huskies to post two victories on the evening. Sophomore Sam
Hiatt (DeKalb) started with a pin against Elmhurst's Rich Schmidt in the 133
pound bout before picking up a major decision (22-9) against Marcus Colsas of
Loras. In the 184-pound weight class, junior Ben Heizer (Arlington, TX / Bowie)
defeated Paul Cleary, the top ranked Division III wrestler at that weight, after
receiving a forfeit versus Elmhurst.
Senior James Oliva (Bartlett / Streamwood) ran his winning streak at 197 pounds
to seven matches as he defeated Dave Anderson of Elmhurst 15-13 before picking
up a 10-9 decision over Justin Post from Loras. In the 165-pound bouts, Jeremy
Benesh (Oregon) pinned Elmhurst's Jay Mateja before scoring a 4-0 decision
against Ricih Schroeder of Loras.
Against Elmhurst, Jeremy Ryerson (Clinton) pinned Rory Remour at 125 pounds,
while 141 pounder John O'Malley (Chicago / St. Rita) picked up an 11-8 decision
over Josh Oster. Andreas Hamlet (Lake Villa / Grayslake) pinned Jesse Beecraft
in the 174-pound match and Zac Jensen (Hopkins, MN) won at heavyweight by
pinning Carl Young. In the second match against Loras, George Kirgan (Granite
City) pinned Tom Andrews at 174 pounds and Jack Dennis (Oakley, KS) prevailed in
the heavyweight bout, 7-5 over Pat Thomas.
Northern Illinois is on the road for its next contest when it travels to West
Lafayette, IN, for the Purdue Duals, hosted by the 16th-ranked Boilermakers.

2003 World Championships Pay Per View - It's all about Choice
12/10/2002
Larry
Nugent/USAW Director of Development
Over the next two weeks, USA Wrestling is asking everyone that visits TheMat.com
to participate in a survey that will measure the interest in a pay-per-view
offering of the 2003 World Championships from Madison Square Garden next
September. The survey will be used to predict if it is feasible
given the cost
of broadcasting a Pay-Per-View event.
It would be great if everyone could attend the Championships in person. It is
our goal for a sell out! The reality is that many simply cannot attend. USA
Wrestling wants to give the wrestling fans of America a CHOICE. If you cannot
attend in person
watch the Semi-Finals and Finals in their entirety and via
Pay-Per View.
Another bit of reality is this: If the event is not pay-per-view, the best we
can expect is a tape delayed broadcast on cable in which the matches are shown
as highlights and only some of the matches can be featured.
Imagine every match shown completely, with "live" interviews, features and
highlights of how the competitors got to the finals or semi-finals. Imagine the
excitement that your wrestling buddies will experience IF Cael Sanderson makes
the USA Team and then reaches the Semi-Finals and then the Finals of the
Worlds
perhaps against Russian superstar Satiev or Cuba's popular Romero!
Our research shows that USA Wrestling will need at least 3000 pay-per-view
customers to break even on this venture. If successful, it could pave the way
for future Pay-Per-Views of other important and popular wrestling events.
So please, participate in the survey and ask anyone else that might be
interested to fill out a survey as well.
Five participants will be randomly selected to receive a 2000 Olympic Team
Poster Set and a TheMat.com T-shirt. Winners will be contacted by E-mail
following the conclusion of the survey.
