CEO OF US OLYMPIC COMMITTEE TO ADDRESS KELLOGG SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT GRADUATES
Evanston, Ill. June 14, 2005--Jim Scherr, chief executive officer of the United
States Olympic Committee (USOC) and alumnus of the Kellogg School of Management
at Northwestern University, will deliver the commencement address to his alma
mater's Class of 2005.
"It is a privilege to return to the Kellogg School to welcome the graduates into
the next chapter of their lives," said Mr. Scherr. "I am honored to be among
future global leaders. As I have, I know that the graduates will often call upon
the leadership tools and the academic insights that they gained from their
Kellogg experience when facing difficult new challenges and celebrating
tremendous successes in the years ahead."
The graduation ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 18 beginning at 3:30
p.m. at the Northwestern University Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston. The Kellogg
School expects to award 1,000 master's of business administration degrees at the
ceremony.
About Jim Scherr
Jim Scherr was named chief executive officer of the United
States Olympic Committee on April 29, 2005. As CEO, Scherr directs an
organization dedicated to providing the services and support necessary to enable
America's athletes to realize their Olympic and Paralympic dreams.
Scherr has been directing the day-to-day operations of the USOC since March 2,
2003, when he was asked to serve as acting CEO while continuing in the dual role
of chief of sport performance. As acting CEO, Scherr helped lead the
organization through a critical period that resulted in a landmark governance
reform process which has enabled the USOC to reach new levels of effectiveness
and efficiency in the fulfillment of its mission.
As chief of sport performance, Scherr directed many of the programs and services
offered by the USOC in support of the U.S. National Governing Bodies for Sport
and America's athletes -- programs that helped America's Olympic athletes win an
unprecedented 137 medals at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games and 2004
Athens Olympic Games.
A 1988 Olympian in freestyle wrestling, Scherr finished fifth at the Olympic
Games in Seoul, Korea. He won multiple medals in World Championship competition
and is a three-time U.S. National Champion and two-time World Cup champion. He
was named USA Wrestling Man of the Year in 1994 and received the National
Wrestling Hall of Fame Order of Merit in 1997.
Scherr earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska, and his MBA
from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
