Adidas Combat Speed 5
Adidas has completely perfected the execution of the Combat Speed silhouette with the new Combat Speed 5. The reminiscent features of the Combat Speed were first spotted in 1988 while grappling with the Soviets and many other wrestling legends across the world. The Combat Speed series is one of the longest running lines of wrestling shoes ever made and has stayed true to its roots and stood the test of time. Today, Adidas has infused its state-of-the-art technology into the classic Combat Speed line, making it one of the lightest, fastest, and most versatile shoes available.
The Combat Speed 5 features newly updated soles that consist of two traction pads and a firm middle piece covered by fabric providing added rigidity. The patented target soles are the same design that Adidas has been using since the 80’s to provide its athletes the traction and flexibility to out maneuver and out perform their opponents. The same soles that Alexander Karelin used to put his opponents upside down on their heads, are essentially the same classic soles that have been updated to today’s standards. One of these updates that the grandparent models did not feature was an EVA foam-cut midsole. This enables its wearer to be less flat footed and more on their toes, allowing them to constantly stalk their opponents and be more responsive. With its lightweight but responsive grip soles, the Combat Speed 5 was designed to create the fastest and lightest wrestling experience possible with no unneeded rubber to weigh it down.
A huge mix-up to the Combat Speed design is the updated upper design. The past model of Combat Speed was composed of mainly mesh and fabric that gave it an overall “cheap” construction feel. The new model features an upper of super breathable mesh with a blend of synthetic materials to provide additional support and durability, adding the assurance of quality. The new flexible TPU stripes and side panels add that extra push of support and flexibility that the other Combat Speeds were never in reach of. The Combat Speed 5 is truly one of the most flexible classic boot-cut shoes available, and instantly creates that sock-like, broken-in feeling. Finishing off the upper is a very familiar and simplistic lace strap that allows for quick secured lacing, without adding any bulk to its slick design.
The Combat Speed 5 comes in a plethora of new colors that can fit any mood or occasion and still look awesome. At an entry-level price point, the newly updated upper provides that sock-like and “no shoe at all” feeling that the more expensive and advanced shoes try to replicate. The soles of the shoe are not considered to be high-grip soles but have gained a significant cult-like following for their sticky grip, while not compromising any of their lightweight speed or flexibility. The Adidas Combat Speed 5 is truly a shoe made for combat. Whether in the big matches or everyday practice, they are designed to perform in the heat of battle.
